ADC Dares Wike, Says He Cannot Stop Amaechi From Campaigning In Rivers

The Rivers State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has told the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, that he has no legal or moral right to stop its vice presidential candidate, Rotimi Amaechi, from campaigning in Rivers State.

The party was reacting to comments credited to Wike, who reportedly said Amaechi would find it difficult to campaign in the state unless he stopped attacking President Bola Tinubu and accounted for funds Wike alleges were misappropriated while Amaechi was in office.

In a statement by its state publicity secretary, Chizy Enyi, the ADC said Amaechi does not need Wike’s permission to visit, campaign or seek the votes of Rivers people. It described the warning as a threat to the rights of opposition politicians.

The party also asked why Wike, who served as Amaechi’s Chief of Staff and later governed Rivers for eight years, had not pushed for prosecution if he has evidence. It challenged him to present it to the appropriate authorities, adding that political abuse is not a substitute for debate.

The ADC ended by saying “Rivers State is not anybody’s inheritance”, and that no minister has the licence to decide who may campaign in the state.
