The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has asked Muslims across Nigeria to look out for the new crescent of Jumadal Ula 1448 AH on Sunday, October 11, 2026.

The Sultan, who is also President-General of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), made the call in a statement issued on Saturday, October 10. It was signed by the Wazirin Sokoto, Professor Sambo Wali Junaidu, who chairs the Sultanate Council’s Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs.

According to the statement, Sunday corresponds to the 29th day of Rabi’us Thani 1448 AH and has been set aside for the nationwide moon-sighting exercise that decides when the new Islamic month begins.

Muslims were asked to watch the western horizon after sunset for the new crescent. Anyone who sees it should report quickly to the nearest district head or village head, who will pass the information on to the Sultan.

The Sultanate Council urged the public to wait for the official announcement once the exercise is over, since confirmation by the appropriate religious authorities will decide the start of Jumadal Ula.
